Dr Christopher Gribbin leads a five-session exploration of how ancient Greek audiences understood and experienced tragedy. The course begins with myth, poetry, performance and the birth of theatre before moving through the physical and social world of tragedy, including theatres, actors, costumes and festivals. A dedicated session examines Aristotle’s ideas about what makes an effective tragedy, followed by two sessions focused on Euripides’ Medea and the different meanings the play can hold for ancient and modern audiences. Presented as part of the Hellenic Museum’s 2027 Summer School, the course is designed for both in-person and online participants, with remote attendees able to join live or watch recorded lectures later.
