Messini

Messini is a Greek restaurant on Toronto's Danforth Avenue, built around an authentic gyro tradition brought from Greece to Canada. Founded by Marinos Dafnas, the restaurant has become part of the Greek dining landscape of the Danforth, combining family culinary heritage with one of Greece's most recognisable street-food classics.

Marinos Dafnas was born in Greece and moved to Canada in 1992. In 2003, he opened Messini as a sit-down restaurant with table service after recognising something missing from the area's Greek food scene: while souvlaki was widely available along the Danforth, he wanted to offer the style of traditional gyro he knew from Greece.

At the heart of Messini is a family recipe with roots dating back to 1969, when it was created by Marinos's uncle, who was also a restaurateur. This connection gives the restaurant's gyro a direct link to decades of Greek restaurant tradition and family experience.

One of the defining details is the addition of French fries directly inside the gyro wrap. Rather than being a modern adaptation, this preparation reflects a familiar way of serving gyros in Greece and was part of the concept Marinos brought to Toronto.

The combination of seasoned gyro, fries and the familiar format of Greek street food helped distinguish Messini from the souvlaki-focused restaurants Marinos encountered when developing the concept. Its approach connects the casual character of food from back home with a full restaurant experience on the Danforth.

With a family gyro recipe dating to 1969 and a Toronto presence established in 2003, Messini offers a Greek dining experience shaped by heritage, tradition and the flavours of authentic Greek gyros.
