Akropolis is a historic Greek restaurant in Mannheim, Germany, serving Greek and Mediterranean cuisine with a family story dating back to 1955. Located in Mannheim-Quadrate, the restaurant combines longstanding Greek culinary tradition with carefully presented dining, seafood, grilled specialties, mezze and selected wines. The story of Akropolis began with Dimos Chatzinikolaou, who came to Germany in the 1940s and met his future wife Tatjana in Mannheim. Together they began selling Greek meat skewers at fairs and festivals, introducing local guests to flavours that were still largely unfamiliar in Germany at the time. The concept grew successfully and eventually led to the opening of their own restaurant. In 1955, Dimos took over premises on Luisenring and established Akropolis. According to the restaurant's history, it became Mannheim's first Greek restaurant and one of the pioneering Greek restaurants of post-war Germany. Its wood-fired grill in the dining room, hearty food and welcoming atmosphere helped establish the restaurant among guests from Mannheim and the surrounding region. The next generation became involved in 1973, when Dimos's eldest son Niko took over the restaurant. He gradually refined its character and interior, moving from the original rustic setting towards a more elegant dining environment while preserving the family's Greek culinary identity.
