Evros is the northeasternmost region of Greece and one of the most geographically and culturally distinctive areas of Thrace. Located at the natural crossroads between Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, the region is known for its rivers, wetlands, forests, agricultural plains and strong Thracian heritage shaped by centuries of history and cultural diversity.
The region takes its name from the Evros River, the largest river in the Balkans, which forms the natural border between Greece and Turkey. The fertile plains of Evros have historically supported strong agricultural traditions, while the region’s strategic location made it an important cultural and commercial gateway between Europe and Asia.
Alexandroupoli, the capital and largest city of the region, is an important coastal and economic center of northeastern Greece. The city combines maritime identity, modern development and strong Thracian traditions while serving as the main gateway to the wider region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
Evros is internationally known for the Evros Delta, one of the most important wetland ecosystems in Europe. Lagoons, rivers, islands and protected habitats create a unique natural environment that hosts hundreds of bird species and rare wildlife, making the area internationally significant for biodiversity and ecological protection.
The region is also home to the famous Dadia Forest, one of the most important protected forests in Europe for birds of prey, including eagles, vultures and rare species that live within the forests of the Rhodope mountain range. Traditional towns and villages such as Soufli, Didymoteicho and Orestiada preserve strong local customs, silk-making traditions, Byzantine history and authentic Thracian culture.
The island of Samothrace, administratively connected to Evros, further enriches the identity of the region through its mythology, mountainous landscapes and ancient spiritual heritage connected to the Sanctuary of the Great Gods.
Today, communities and diaspora families originating from Evros continue to preserve strong emotional and cultural ties with their ancestral homeland, maintaining Thracian traditions, family roots and regional heritage across generations.
