Preveza - Epirus (Greece)

Preveza Prefecture is one of the four departments of Epirus. It is bordered on the north with the departments Epirotische, Thesprotia and Ioannina, and in the east with the prefecture of Arta. In the south is the Amvrakikos Gulf and to the west the beautiful Ionian Sea. The northern part of Preveza is mountainous, as several foothills of mountain ranges in Thesprotia and Ioannina lie. The highest mountains are the mountains of Parga (927 meters/3,041 feet), the mountain of Paramithia (1082 meters/3,550 feet), the mountain of Zalongo (772 meters/2,533 feet), the Thesprotika mountain (1274 meters/4,180 feet) and in the northeast Xerovouni which is 1607 meters (5,272 feet) high. In the area of Preveza are also several fertile plains, such as the plains of Filipiada which is an extension of the plain of Arta, Preveza and the plain of Fanari. There are several rivers. The best known are Louros and Acherontas. The capital of the department is Preveza City which is close to the area of ancient Nikopolis. It was founded around 290 BC and much later was occupied by the Venetians, the French and the Turks, before it became part of Greece. Today, this picturesque port with a Venetian castle is a good base to explore the area. There are beautiful beaches like Kiani Akti, Alonaki, Agii Apostoli, Panickratoras, Kalamitsi, Mitikas and Monolithi. The archaeological museum of Nicopolis, 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Preveza is also well worth a visit. The main tourist town is Preveza Parga.

Ο Νομός Πρέβεζας υπήρξε μια αυτοδιοικητική δομή της Ελλάδος, στο γεωγραφικό διαμέρισμα της Ηπείρου και καταλάμβανε την έκταση των σημερινών δήμων Πρέβεζας, Ζηρού και Πάργας. Άρχων του Νομού ήταν ο εκάστοτε νομάρχης Πρέβεζας. Ο Νομός Πρέβεζας καταργήθηκε το 2010. Σήμερα αποτελεί την Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Πρέβεζας, μια υποδιαίρεση της Περιφέρειας Ηπείρου. Βρίσκεται στη νοτιοδυτική άκρη της Ηπείρου. Συνορεύει προς βορρά με τους νομούς Θεσπρωτίας και Ιωαννίνων, ανατολικά με το νομό Άρτας και βρέχεται από τον Αμβρακικό κόλπο και δυτικά βρέχεται από το Ιόνιο Πέλαγος. Ο πληθυσμός του φτάνει τους 57.491 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2011) και έχει πρωτεύουσα την Πρέβεζα. Η θέση του νομού, η μορφολογία του εδάφους και το ήπιο κλίμα του είναι τα βασικά πλεονεκτήματα που διαμορφώνουν τον χαρακτήρα του. Βασικές ασχολίες των κατοίκων είναι η γεωργία, η κτηνοτροφία και η αλιεία. Πρώιμα φρούτα και λαχανικά, εσπεριδοειδή, λάδι, ελιές και δημητριακά είναι τα κύρια προϊόντα του νομού.
