Regional Identity

Kyrenia is one of the historic regions of Cyprus, located along the island’s northern coastline beneath the Pentadaktylos mountain range. Known for its picturesque harbor, coastal beauty, historic castle and cultural heritage, the region has long held a special place in Cypriot identity and memory.

Before 1974, Kyrenia was home to Greek Cypriot, Maronite and Turkish Cypriot communities, with villages and local traditions deeply connected to the history of the island. Following the events of 1974, much of the local population was displaced, and the region remains closely connected to the Cypriot diaspora worldwide.

Today, Kyrenia continues to hold strong emotional and cultural significance for Cypriots across generations, symbolizing heritage, roots, memory and the enduring connection between homeland and diaspora communities around the world.
