Famagusta District

The Famagusta District is one of the six districts of Cyprus, located on the eastern coast of the island. Since the 1974 Turkish invasion, the district has been largely divided by a UN buffer zone; the Republic of Cyprus controls the smaller southeastern section, while most of the northern part, including the main city of Famagusta, is under Turkish control (administered by the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus).

• Area: The entire de jure district covers approximately 1,985 square kilometers. The Republic of Cyprus officially controls only about 244 square kilometers.
• Population: The population in the area under Republic of Cyprus control was approximately 46,629 in 2011, while the population of the city of Famagusta alone was estimated at over 55,000 in 2019.
• Administrative Center: The main town and most important port is Famagusta city. The Republic of Cyprus administration in exile for the district is based in Paralimni
  
  Controlled Areas
  • Republic of Cyprus Control (South): This region is well-known for its tourist resorts and beautiful beaches.
    • Municipalities: Ayia Napa, Paralimni, Deryneia, and Sotira.
    • Key Areas: Includes the popular tourist destinations of Protaras and Cape Greco, a protected coastal nature park. The area is also known as the "red villages" (Kokkinochoria) due to its fertile red soil used for agriculture, especially potato growing.
  • Turkish Control (North): This area includes the historic city of Famagusta and the Karpaz Peninsula.
    • Key Areas: Features historic sites like the Othello Castle and the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (formerly the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas), and the archaeological site of Salamis. The Varosha neighborhood, once a bustling tourist resort, is now a well-known ghost town adjacent to the main city.

      Η Επαρχία Αμμοχώστου είναι μία από τις έξι επαρχίες της Κύπρου, ευρισκόμενη στο ανατολικό τμήμα του νησιού. Πρωτεύουσά της είναι η πόλη της Αμμοχώστου.
       
      Γεωγραφία και Ιστορία
      Η επαρχία καταλαμβάνει το ανατολικό τμήμα της Κύπρου και βρέχεται από τον κόλπο της Αμμοχώστου. Συνορεύει με τις επαρχίες Κερύνειας (βορειοδυτικά), Λευκωσίας (δυτικά) και Λάρνακας (νοτιοδυτικά). 
      Η αρχαία πόλη της Αμμοχώστου ήταν γνωστή ως Σαλαμίνα και αργότερα μετονομάστηκε σε Αρσινόη και Κωνστάντια. Λόγω της στρατηγικής της θέσης και του φυσικού της λιμανιού, εξελίχθηκε σε σπουδαίο εμπορικό κέντρο. 
       
      Διοικητική Κατάσταση
      Μετά την τουρκική εισβολή του 1974, το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της επαρχίας Αμμοχώστου τελεί υπό τουρκική κατοχή. Οι Ελληνοκύπριοι κάτοικοι εκδιώχθηκαν και πολλοί διαμένουν πλέον στις ελεύθερες περιοχές της επαρχίας ή σε άλλες πόλεις της Κύπρου. 
      Διοικητικά, η επαρχία περιλαμβάνει κατεχόμενους και ελεύθερους δήμους: 
      • Κατεχόμενοι Δήμοι: Αμμόχωστος, Ακανθού, Λευκόνοικο, Λύση.
      • Ελεύθεροι Δήμοι: Παραλίμνι, Δερύνεια. 
       
      Σημεία Ενδιαφέροντος
      Το ελεύθερο τμήμα της επαρχίας, συχνά αναφερόμενο ως "Ελεύθερη Επαρχία Αμμοχώστου", είναι σήμερα μια δημοφιλής τουριστική περιοχή, γνωστή για τις όμορφες παραλίες της και τα αξιοθέατα, όπως η Αγία Νάπα και ο Πρωταράς. Η περίκλειστη πόλη των Βαρωσίων (τμήμα του Δήμου Αμμοχώστου) παραμένει μια πόλη-φάντασμα, με τα πάντα να έχουν μείνει όπως το 1974.
