Laconia

Lakonia - Peloponnese (Greece)

Lakonia (Laconia) is one of the seven prefectures of the Peloponnese. Located in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese, it borders to the east with the sea of Myrtoo and Arcadia,  to the north to prefecture Arcadia, to the west to Messenia and to the south to the Gulf of Laconia and the Myrtoo Sea. In Laconia belongs also the islet Elafonisi.

The prefecture of Lakonia is mostly mountainous. Τhere are two mountain ranges, the Taygetos on the west and Parnon οn the east. Between the two ranges lies the basin of Evrotas, the only important river of Lakonia.

the prefecture of Lakonia is a purely rural area. Here are cultivated citrus fruits, cotton, vegetables and strawberries. This region is of one the most fertile regions of Greece. There are also many olive trees, wheat and vines.

In recent decades tourism has developed tremendously,  well loved are the destinations Mystras, Monemvassia, Sparta, Gythio, Mani and the island of Elafonissos.

Githio - Gythio

Gythio is the largest city in "Mani"; the middle arm of the southern Peloponnese was named to the castle of Mainia.To the east of the department is Lakonia Monemvasia in Greek means one entrance; the long road was and is the only access to the rock.

Mystras

Mystras is located 5km north west of Sparta in the prefecture of Lakonia.

Η Λακωνία βρίσκεται στη Νότια Πελοπόννησο και είναι η νοτιότερη περιφερειακή ενότητα της Πελοποννήσου και της ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας. Βρέχεται από το Αιγαίο Πέλαγος (Μυρτώο Πέλαγος), το Μεσσηνιακό κόλπο και το Λακωνικό κόλπο. Έχει δύο κύριες οροσειρές, του Ταϋγέτου που είναι και η υψηλότερη κορυφή της Πελοποννήσου (2.407 μέτρα) και του Πάρνωνα (1.961 μέτρα). Ανάμεσά τους βρίσκεται η Κοιλάδα του Ευρώτα και η Σπάρτη. Συνορεύει στα βόρεια με το νομό Αρκαδίας και στα δυτικά με το νομό Μεσσηνίας. Στο νομό Λακωνίας ανήκει και το κατοικημένο νησί της Πελοποννήσου, η Ελαφόνησος.

Ο νομός έχει έκταση 3.639 τ. χλμ. και πληθυσμό 89.138 κατοίκους, σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2011. Μεγαλύτερη πόλη είναι η Σπάρτη, με πληθυσμό 16.239 κατοίκους. Άλλες σημαντικές πόλεις είναι το Γύθειο, οι Μολάοι, ο Βλαχιώτης, η Σκάλα, η Αρεόπολη, το Οίτυλο, ο Μυστράς, ο Πύργος Διρού, ο Γερολιμένας, η Βάθεια, τα Βρέσθενα, η Μονεμβασιά και η Νεάπολη Βοιών στα Βάτικα.
