The Greek American Folklore Society (GAFS) is a non-profit cultural organization based in Queens, New York, dedicated to preserving, teaching, and promoting the rich history, traditions, music, dances, and folk culture of Greece. Through extensive research and authentic cultural education, the Society serves as an important bridge between Greece's traditional heritage and the Greek diaspora.
The organization offers folk dance instruction for children, adults, and dancers of all experience levels, presenting each dance within its historical, cultural, and regional context. Special emphasis is placed on authentic traditions from every region and island of Greece, as well as historic Greek communities throughout the Balkans and the wider Greek diaspora.
Beyond educational programs, the Greek American Folklore Society organizes cultural performances, lectures, exhibitions, workshops, festivals, costume displays, wedding re-enactments, and public events that celebrate Hellenic heritage. The Society regularly collaborates with distinguished folklorists, dance instructors, and cultural organizations from Greece and North America to ensure the highest level of authenticity in its presentations.
Committed to preserving Greek cultural identity for future generations, GAFS continues to inspire the community through education, research, and cultural exchange while pursuing its long-term vision of establishing a permanent Greek Folk Museum dedicated to the preservation of Greece's traditional costumes, artifacts, music, and folklore.
“So the well educated man will be able both to sing and dance well.”
