Greek Community of Alexandria

The Greek Community of Alexandria is a historic Greek cultural and community organisation founded in 1843 in Alexandria, Egypt. With a continuous institutional presence spanning more than 180 years, the organisation represents an important part of the history of Hellenism in Egypt and the longstanding connections between Greece and Alexandria.

The Community's mission encompasses cultural, educational, social and religious support for its members. Through its activities and initiatives, it contributes to the preservation of Greek language, traditions and cultural identity while maintaining the historical ties between the Greek population of Alexandria and its heritage. Its work reflects the important role that organised community institutions have played in supporting successive generations of Greeks living in Egypt.

The organisation operates under the applicable laws of Egypt. Its constitution, registered under number 304 and approved by the Egyptian Ministry of Social Affairs on 4 March 1968, defines its institutional framework and membership. This framework is connected to the bilateral agreement between Greece and Egypt dated 10 February 1949, following the wider legal developments associated with the Montreux Convention of 1937.

Through its longstanding presence and continued cultural, educational and social activities, the Greek Community of Alexandria contributes to the preservation of Greek heritage in Egypt. Established in the nineteenth century and continuing into the present day, it remains a significant institution within the historic Greek diaspora of Alexandria.
