An evocative evening celebrating the rich musical traditions of Asia Minor, brought to life by two exceptional ensembles.
🎤 Live Music:
Estudiantina of Melbourne
Saltana
Estudiantina of Melbourne is one of Australia’s leading ensembles dedicated to the music of Asia Minor, rebetiko, and the broader Eastern Mediterranean tradition. Inspired by the historic “estudiantina” orchestras of Smyrna, the group brings together accomplished musicians who specialise in period style and instrumentation, including violin, oud, qanun, guitar, and accordion. Their performances are known for their authenticity, musical depth, and strong connection to the cultural histories behind this repertoire.
Joining them is Saltana, a Melbourne-based ensemble exploring the intersection of traditional Arabic, Turkish, and Middle Eastern sounds with a contemporary sensibility. With expressive vocals and rich instrumental textures, Saltana reinterprets songs of love, exile, and resilience, offering a fresh yet respectful approach to this musical tradition.
Together, the two ensembles present a dynamic programme inspired by the vibrant sounds of Smyrna, Constantinople, and the wider Asia Minor region. Expect haunting melodies, intricate rhythms, and powerful storytelling that honours this musical heritage.
