Plastikes Karekles

Plastikes Karekles is a London-based music ensemble bringing together Greek and international musicians through a distinctive fusion of traditional Greek folk music, rebetiko, classical music and jazz. The group combines classical string instruments with traditional Greek instruments, developing its own arrangements and interpretations of compositions by prominent Greek composers such as Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis and Stavros Xarhakos. Its musical approach connects Greece's rich cultural heritage with different instrumental traditions, creating a dialogue between familiar melodies and contemporary artistic expression.

The ensemble has performed internationally in Greece, Italy, France and Qatar, alongside appearances at major venues and cultural festivals across the United Kingdom. Its performance history includes London's Purcell Room, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, King's Place, Green Note and Vortex, as well as St David's Hall in Cardiff. Plastikes Karekles has also participated in events such as the Rebetiko Carnival Festival, Equator: Women of the World Festival and The Proms. Rebetiko holds a particularly important place in the group's activities. Its musicians established the Rebet Asker – Greek Roots Series at London's Green Note, creating a dedicated platform for exploring and presenting this influential Greek musical tradition. Members of the ensemble are also among the founders of Rebetiko Carnival, a charitable initiative associated with a month-long festival celebrating rebetiko music and its cultural significance.

Beyond concerts and musical performances, Plastikes Karekles places considerable emphasis on education, cu
