Dr Christopher Gribbin leads a five-session exploration of how monumental Christian architecture developed from the age of Constantine onward. The course begins with the earliest large churches and the adaptation of Roman architectural forms before tracing the experimentation and diversity that shaped church design between the fourth and sixth centuries. Later sessions examine decoration in paint and stone, the emergence of Byzantine and Orthodox architectural traditions in the East, and the contrasting Romanesque developments of Western Europe. Presented as part of the Hellenic Museum’s 2027 Summer School, the course is available both in person and online, with remote participants able to join live or watch recorded lectures later.
