Mediterraneo

Mediterraneo is a multicultural music ensemble based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, established in 2022 by musicians from Greece, Syria and Turkey. Bringing together their shared musical backgrounds and experiences at Codarts World Music & Dance Centre, the group explores the connections between classical Mediterranean traditions and contemporary musical expression.

The ensemble's repertoire combines Arabic, Greek and Turkish compositions, drawing on modal musical traditions and incorporating modern arrangements and influences. Its artistic approach brings together Eastern melodic structures with Western classical and contemporary elements, creating opportunities for experimentation and collaboration across musical styles. Traditions such as Greek rebetiko, makam music and classical Ottoman music form part of its wider artistic interests.

Through Mediterraneo Stichting, the project also aims to support world music within the Dutch cultural landscape. Its mission includes creating professional opportunities for musicians, organising concerts, educational initiatives and cultural festivals, and encouraging collaboration between artists and audiences from different backgrounds.

Mediterraneo connects musical heritage with contemporary creativity, using performance and cultural exchange to introduce Mediterranean musical traditions to wider audiences. Its work reflects a shared commitment to artistic diversity, intercultural dialogue and the continuing development of Mediterranean music in the Netherlands.
